Our city is one of the regions with the longest history of cultivating camellia in China, with a history of more than 700 years of camellia cultivation. The geomorphic features of “surrounded by mountains on three sides with a river, basins with three rivers and culverts” and the warm and humid subtropical monsoon climate are very suitable for the growth of camellia. As early as the 1930s, camellia in our city was beautiful in tree shape, large and gorgeous flowers, and flowers. It is famous all over the country for its changeable and long flowering period.
In 1986, camellia became the city flower of our city. At present, our city has a Chinese Camellia Culture Garden covering an area of more than 20 hectares, an International Camellia Species Garden covering an area of 4 hectares and a collection of 204 varieties from home and abroad, and the country’s first Chinese Camellia Museum. It is a veritable “Chinese Camellia” township”.
At present, the city’s camellia planting area is stable at 18,000 mu (accounting for 6.74% of the national planting area of 267,000 mu), the output value is 360 million yuan (accounting for 7.84% of the national camellia output value of 4.59 billion yuan), and the number of direct employees exceeds 5,000. The structure has shifted from a single traditional breeding and sales to a full-industry chain operation including the introduction and cultivation of new and excellent varieties at home and abroad, potted plants, modeling, exhibitions, cultural tourism, etc., with a group of large professional households with a planting scale of more than 100 acres and annual sales of more than one million yuan , To drive the development of our city’s camellia base to scale. In 2020, the city’s flower and seedling sales will reach 2.523 billion yuan, and the total output value will reach 5.08 billion yuan.
In recent years, the city has cultivated and developed the camellia industry as the eight pillar industries of the agricultural economy, and has begun to follow the development road of “enterprise + farmer + market”, support and expand leading camellia enterprises, promote new technologies, and make the camellia industry scale up and upscale. At the same time, our city put forward the strategic goal of “Revival of Camellia” and organized various forms of camellia academic exchanges, trade, networking and other activities, such as Yiwu Fair, China Miao Fair, Camellia Exhibition, Camellia Festival and various exhibition activities. The city’s strong e-commerce economy promotes the development of forest products e-commerce. Among them, the Miao-miao Fair has been held for 18 consecutive years, and Wucheng District has also held 10 consecutive Camellia Festivals. A number of camellia characteristic towns including Zhuma Township and Luodian Town have emerged. Representing the “billion-yuan village” with flower and seedlings as the main channel for increasing income, the industrial chain continues to expand.
